The U.S. Department of Energy (DOE) has made yet another short-sighted decision to cancel 24 projects, including two in Alabama, funded in 2024 through the DOE’s Office of Clean Energy Demonstration.
The $75 million in funding awarded to American Cast Iron Pipe Co. would have enabled American Cast Iron to increase its manufacturing capacity by 25 percent, reduced CO2 emissions by more than 60% (up to 95% in some applications) and created 80 to 100 new manufacturing jobs at its Birmingham facility.
The U.S. Pipe and Foundry project would have replaced a “coke-fired furnace with electrical induction,” according to the DOE webpage announcing the award. The new technology would have reduced carbon emissions by an estimated 70%.
“These funding cancellations are disruptive to the plans and operations of American companies putting Alabama-based jobs and investment on the chopping block. Energy Alabama encourages the Department of Energy to honor and restore its financial commitments to American manufacturing,” said Sheree Martin, Deputy Director and General Counsel of Energy Alabama.
