A group [Energy Institute of Alabama] made up of state power company officials has released a study showing how much money the energy industry generates for Alabama.
It’s a lot — $13.22 billion overall, while supporting 124,000 jobs and paying $385 million in taxes. As gaudy as they are, those numbers may not shock people in a state where electricity cools and, occasionally, heats buildings year-round. Alabama is among the top states in the nation for both power production and consumption, according to federal data.

Alabama clean energy advocates said renewable standards can come without higher power bills. Energy Alabama CEO Daniel Tait said similar moves in North Carolina and other states have actually lowered rates.
