Energy Alabama Encourages Public Participation in TVA’s Long-Term Energy Planning Process
Huntsville, AL – Today, the Tennessee Valley Authority released its updated draft Integrated Resource Plan (IRP) and opened a 30-day public comment period for the public to provide feedback on the utility’s long-term energy strategy.
Energy Alabama encourages residents, businesses, and communities served by TVA to review the plan and participate in the public comment process. The comment period is open from June 22 to July 22. “TVA’s decisions will shape energy costs, reliability, and economic development across the Tennessee Valley for decades to come,” said Sheree Martin, Deputy Director and General Counsel for Energy Alabama. “Public input is an essential part of that process, and TVA should ensure that stakeholder feedback receives meaningful consideration before the board takes final action on the plan.”
The draft plan includes updated electricity demand projections, continued investments in new methane gas generation, and proposals to extend the operation of existing coal plants. These decisions could commit TVA customers to billions of dollars in additional infrastructure costs while delaying investments in energy efficiency, renewable energy, and other technologies that can help keep electricity affordable and strengthen long-term reliability. They also carry consequences for air quality, public health, and the natural resources that support communities and businesses throughout the Tennessee Valley. As TVA plans for future growth, we encourage the utility’s decisionmakers to carefully evaluate whether these investments represent the most cost-effective path forward for customers while protecting both ratepayers and the places they call home.
The public comment period is open through July 22.
