Energy Alabama statement on Senate proposal to raise energy prices, undermine clean energy
HUNTSVILLE, AL — Energy Alabama strongly opposes the reconciliation package championed by the Trump-Vance administration and U.S. Senate leadership, which ranks among the most damaging federal energy policy proposals in decades.
This bill slashes clean energy investments that have created thousands of good-paying jobs across Alabama, It directly threatens the state’s growing network of solar PV manufacturing facilities, like First Solar’s Lawrence County plant, Runergy’s Madison County plant, OMCO Solar’s Limestone and Talladega County plants, and the many Alabama-based companies supplying components to clean energy projects across the Southeast.
Even more problematic is what will happen to regular people as a result of these cuts. The Edison Electric Institute, representing utilities like Alabama Power, estimates that the House version of this bill would drive up electric bills by $60 billion nationally. The Senate’s version is even more extreme. Alabama already suffers from some of the highest electric bills in the country. Working families simply cannot afford this.
The House and Senate bills threaten major solar developments in our rural counties, projects that would deliver millions in tax revenue for local schools and generate affordable, reliable American-made power for Alabama’s grid. The bill will destroy good paying jobs in energy efficiency and solar installation, an industry sector that has seen rapid growth over the past 4 years.
Equally concerning is the fact that Alabama Senators Katie Britt and Tommy Tuberville have repeatedly expressed their public support for this bill and have not attempted to amend problematic provisions in any meaningful way. Their failure to stand up for the wellbeing of Alabamians is unacceptable.
Alabama’s energy future, and the wellbeing of our most vulnerable neighbors, should not be sacrificed for political theater.
Energy Alabama will continue working alongside communities, advocates, and responsible leaders to defeat this dangerous legislation and defend access to clean, affordable, reliable energy in Alabama.
