Montgomery, AL — “Alabama Power has been signing contracts for hundreds of megawatts of power for new data centers, and the public has had zero visibility into who pays for the infrastructure or what risks land on regular customers.
Today, the PSC opened a proceeding that will lead to the creation of real rules for reviewing these deals, as required by a new state law we supported earlier this year. Alabama Power insists these deals protect ratepayers. Today’s decision will give the public the chance to help set the rules and hold Alabama Power accountable to its promises.
Energy Alabama thanks the Commission for taking this step and intends to participate in the proceedings.
We want to see the Commission address at least three things: that data centers pay their own way, that customers are protected from the costs of unnecessary new infrastructure if these data centers shrink or disappear, and that any new load growth is met with clean energy built here in Alabama.
Alabamians already pay some of the highest power bills in America. This is the Commission’s chance to make sure the data center boom doesn’t land on their electric bill too.” — Daniel Tait, Executive Director of Energy Alabama
