Students will investigate different types of solar energy careers and understand the roles and services associated with each profession. Through hands-on activities, they’ll select one career to examine in depth and develop a brief autobiographical-style interview report, connecting the abstract concept of renewable energy to real-world jobs in their communities.

The lesson provides essential background on renewable energy (energy from naturally replenished resources like wind, solar, geothermal, biofuel, and hydro) and sustainability. Activities & Structure
Engage Phase (15 minutes) – “Match it Up!”
Students work in groups of 3-4 to organize and match solar energy career cards. Each group receives a set of pre-cut cards including 10 Career cards (featuring faces/people), 10 Goods cards (showing objects), 10 Services cards (text descriptions), and 3 category cards for organization. Students arrange these in columns/rows to correctly match each career with its associated goods and services. Teachers can project cards for whole-class guidance or allow independent small-group work depending on student age and ability.
Explore Phase (30 minutes) – “Make it Personal!”
Students choose one solar career from the 10 they learned about for role-play. They complete “An Interview of You!” worksheet, drawing on knowledge from the card-matching activity (with cards available for reference). Each student in a group selects a different career. Students then pair up to conduct mock interviews using the “An Interview of a Friend!” worksheet. Younger students (K-1st) may complete only the first interview page, while older students (2nd grade) complete both pages.
Evaluate Phase (5 minutes) – “Discuss it!”
The lesson concludes with whole-class reflection discussion addressing: Did students know about these careers before the activity? What influenced their career choice? How might they collaborate with the friend they interviewed?
