Energy Alabama on Tennessee Valley Authority’s 2025 Draft Integrated Resource Plan
The Tennessee Valley Authority (TVA) has released its 2025 Draft Integrated Resource Plan (IRP), outlining the utility’s strategy to meet electricity demand over the next 25 years.
Energy Alabama acknowledges several positive aspects of the plan, including the prospect of greater solar and wind generation, the possible expansion of energy efficiency and demand response programs, and continued commitment to phase out coal-fired generation assets by 2035 and. However, we remain concerned about TVA’s continued exploration of gas expansion options, some of the modeling assumptions used in crafting the potential costs and benefits of different strategies, scenarios, and the wide range of potential used for each category of generation. The ranges are so wide, in fact, that it can be difficult to anticipate what TVA’s plan would actually look like.
“While we appreciate TVA’s progress in transitioning away from coal, we believe that the utility needs to adopt a more ambitious decarbonization pathway,” said Daniel Tait, Executive Director of Energy Alabama. “We urge TVA to prioritize clean energy generation and storage options, while accelerating efforts to reduce reliance on fossil fuels.”
