Trump-Vance Administration Fires Entire Staff That Helps Alabamians Pay Their Energy Bills
Huntsville, AL – In a sweeping round of cuts to the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services, the Trump-Vance administration has fired all federal employees managing the Low Income Home Energy Assistance Program (LIHEAP)—a move that could devastate tens of thousands of households across Alabama.
“This decision will likely strip essential utility bill support from tens of thousands of Alabamians—and millions more across the country,” said Daniel Tait, Executive Director of Energy Alabama. “Without this critical assistance, many households face the very real risk of utility shutoffs, leaving families in unsafe, even life-threatening, conditions without power.”
LIHEAP helps low-income families afford their energy bills, especially during extreme weather. In Alabama, where both intense summer heat and winter cold can be dangerous, this program serves as a vital safety net. Over 70% of LIHEAP recipients include at least one vulnerable person—a child under six, a senior citizen, or someone living with a disability.
Energy Alabama is calling on local, state, and federal leaders to speak out against the cuts and push for immediate federal action to restore this crucial program.
